The history of mankind intertwines endlessly and undeniably with the act of disguise, which ensures to the mask, since ever, to be one of the most basic and recognizable forms in all its immense varieties. Whether for its cultural importance, artistic excellence or spiritual ability, it is only through human interaction that the mask actually gains life. A mask allows to those who use it freedom and anonymity, a space to explore the depths of the being and even to serve as a catalyst for the spontaneous rise of alter egos. A mask is an invitation to reaffirm, assume, protect, create or hide an identity.
For its 2nd edition, P.Art.S. has invited about 30 contemporary artists from 16 different nationalities to recontextualize and reimagine the role of the mask in our days. The project resulted in a collective and multidisciplinary exhibition where each artist integrated their personal influences. This catalog was developed with the purpose of accompanying the exhibition. In it participate some of the artists who are part this P.Art.S. edition, and others to whom, and due to their special nature, we made a special invitation: allow to be photographed wearing a mask of their choice. We dedicate this important part of the project to the woods, to the forest and to the reforestation of two areas in Portugal which were very affected by the fires of 2017 and 2018, Pedrógão Grande and Serra de Monchique. It will be through the hands of Reflorestar Portugal that we will intervene in these zones and with the funds raised through the sale of this catalogue. To all who participated directly and indirectly in this special piece of P.Art.S woods edition, our sincere gratitude.
